Rehearsals at open air theatre, Lehragaga
A commendable display of histrionic abilities was witnessed in Guru Nanak Dev Bhawan here last evening as Media Artists staged Punjabi adaptation of Shakespeare's classic tragedy 'Macbeth' leaving the audience awestruck.
The adaptation from the original to Punjabe was done by Balram who managed to retain the flavour of the original.
Macbeth of Shakespeare became Muzzafar, a Punjabi nobleman played by Sukhwinder. Sanju Solanki was the sutradhar. Punjabi folk music sung to the traditional Punjabi accompaniment created a perfect Punjabi ambience.
The amateur actors from nondescript Lehragaga area of Sangrur district guided by theatre professionals wove a magical spell with their performances. Pargat, Gaurav and Kiranpal earned well-deserved applause for their role of three witches. The play is about the deadly ambition of Muzzafar and his lady, played by Sukhwinder Kaur, as their ruthless manoeuvres trap them in the twists of their own fatal game.
The director, Samual John, talking about the play said, "Good and evil have been balanced on humanity's scales since the dawn of civilisation. The duality is held, but rarely understood. In Macbeth, we have tried to portray human impulses, desires and fears, and expose those dark secrets that lie below life's smooth surface."
Surjit Patar, an acclaimed poet, summed up the audiences' reactions praising the script and performance. Gurbhajan Gill, vice president, Punjabi Sahit Academy, also appreciated the play. Gill said that he had seen a fine performance on the stage after a long time.
