Neelam Man Singh Chowdhry's play The Suit staged at Guru Nanak Bhawan last evening created a stir shocking the sensibilities of a few with its bold theme but leaving all spellbound with the poetic grace as the story unfolded on the stage.
It was both a treat as well as a thinking point for those who came to see it. Brought to the town by 'Media Artists', the play had an highly impressive cast comprising one of most well-known name in theatre Ramanjit Kaur, Vansh Bhardwaj the handsome dude who plays the lead role opposite Priety Zinta in Deepa Mehta's Heaven on Earth and Hitender Kumar who is the casting director of Dalip Mehta's film What's Cooking Stella. The musicians of the play included Satnam Meher Chand, Bhadhur Chand, Amarjeet and Desraj while the lighting was designed by Daulat Ram Vaid. This bilingual play has been dramatized by renowned Punjabi poet Dr Surjit Patar.
The play which is based on theatrical fable, penned by South African writer Can Themba, a young married couple is faced with a tragic moral dilemma. When Bunty (the husband) discovers Minna (his wife) with her lover, he forces her to keep the man's discarded suit and treat it as an honored guest. The suit of clothes even joins them on walks. Despite the absurd nature of this punishment, it slowly provokes the free-spirited but repressed wife's mental destruction-a metaphor for the insidious emotional abuse of apartheid that plagued South Africa.
In the deft hands of the thespian Neelam Man Singh aided by the penmanship of celebrated poet and playwright Surjit Patar, the play turned out to be one of the best theatre performances seen in the city in a long time.
College lecturer Tarlok Bandhu remarked, "More of such plays should be bought to the city to let the people know what real theatre is. This city off late has seen gimmickry in name of theatre which has totally desensitised them from appreciating the true art." Ramandeep Kaur, a student of PAU added, “The way Ramanjit and Hitender performed on the stage showed us aspiring actors how important training is for a good actor.”
