Melody, music and meditation flowed together at Taal, a studio for performing arts here last night. The brother duo of Teji and Manpreet Gill enthralled the audience with timeless Punjabi poetry and music. True to the title ‘naad anaad, the two singers took the audience through a journey of time, the vehicle for which was music. This musical night was organized by Media Artists.
From Sheikh Farid, Baba Bulleh Shah to Punjabi Folk, Kuldeep Manak, Shiv Kumar Batalvi and others, both the singers brought out the richness of music through their rendition. Talking about the performance, popular Punjabi poet Dr Surjit Pattar said, ‘‘Once after listening to the live performance of the Wadali brothers, I felt that probably the singing of these qawwals is heard by the God, for they sing in such high notes. Then I heard Jagjit Singh, and felt that if the qawwals were able to touch the stars, singers like Jagjit Singh bring the stars to earth. In Teji and Manpreet, both these qualities exist together, which they displayed to hilt at this performance. When they pitch high, they touch the stars and then through low notes they bring those very stars to earth. The entire experience tonight has been ethereal for me.’’ The singer-duo were ably helped by their maternal uncle Jagdeesh Papra, who accompanied them as a singer and Vicky Kumar, who was on the tabla.
Commenting on the essence of the programme, Jatinder Preet of Media Artists and Gurpreet Singh Harry of Taal said, ‘‘We are striving to make such mehfils a regular feature in the city. We have begun with a musical night, and the next programme on cards is a single-actor comedy, a Hindi play titled Shagoofe, in July. The idea is to bring together talent from various places for the people of Ludhiana.’’
